介係詞片語由｢介係詞+名詞」、｢介係詞+代名詞」或是｢介係詞+動名詞(Ving)」組成，關於介係詞介紹，請見介係詞(Preposition)。
before lunch(午餐前，介係詞+名詞)
next to it(在它旁邊，介係詞+代名詞)
during working(工作時，介係詞+動名詞(Ving))

而介係詞片語可以當名詞、形容詞、副詞。
當名詞：可以做為主詞或補語，作為主詞放在be動詞前；作為主詞補語放在be動詞之後。
Before sleeping is good time to drink milk.(睡前是喝牛奶的好時機)(當主詞)
=The good time to drink milk is before sleeping. (當補語)

當形容詞：可以修飾名詞或當補語，放在修飾的名詞之後
The house next to the park is big and beautiful.(在公園旁的房子又大又漂亮)

當副詞：可以修飾動詞、形容詞或整個句子，修飾動詞放在動詞片語之後，修飾整個句子時，將介係詞片語置於句首，加上逗號語主要子句區隔。
Alex went to the party with his girlfriend.(Alex和他女友一起去派對)
After dinner, Mary and Jack walked in the park.(在晚餐後，Mary和Jack到公園散步)
