英文中，by contrast表示「相比之下｣，但限於比較｢完全相反｣的時候使用，像是高矮、大小、多與少等等。而in contrast主要強調存在差異時使用，也就是對照，所以並不一定連接相反地事物，只要有不一樣即可。
Alex is tall. By contrast, his brother, Chris, is small.(Alex很高，但相反的，他哥哥Chris卻很矮)
