英文中的定冠詞只有｢the｣一個，定冠詞放在名詞之前，即能表達所指稱的事物是特定的(可能是先前的對話或句子已經提到過)。
而the在意義上可能表達this(這個)、that(那個)、these(這些)、those(那些)，所以the後面可以加名詞的單數或複數
The car is new. 可表示｢這部/那部車是新的｣ = This/That car is new.
The cars are new. 可表示｢這些/那些車是新的｣ = These/Those cars are new.
